SALON DU LIVRE DU GRAND SUDBURY

J'ai pu sortir mon vélo une dernière fois et rouler avec ceux qui avaient troqué leur voitures pour la petite reine afin de se rendre de la Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury à la première activité littéraire du Salon.
Cet événement a été l’occasion de susciter une prise de conscience de la nécessaire réduction du nombre de voitures sur les routes au profit du vélo. Pour promouvoir son utilisation, trente bicyclettes ont ainsi été mises à la disposition du grand public gratuitement au marché des fermiers pendant toute la durée du Salon.

I was able to take out the bike one more time and join those who chose to leave their cars and cycle from the Opening ceremony of the Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury to the first literary event of the Salon. An event to promote bicycle use in an effort to reduce the number of cars on the road. Thirty bikes have been made available free of charge for use by the general public for the duration of the Salon.

Cycles

Cycles is an ongoing series of physical and virtual interventions that continues Cheryl Rondeau's exploration of the intersection between art and the everyday. Using the bike as the main mode of travel each intervention is fueled by determination and human-power.

Physical endurance forms a central theme of the project. The use of the body in the artist’s displacement, its emphatic integration in the terrain, proposes a questioning of our perceptions of time and space in a world constantly shrinking within the virtual realm of cyberspace and ever-increasing air travel. Borders and geography are collapsed, disappearing from our collective memory. With this series of physical and virtual interventions Cheryl Rondeau pursues an investigation of the relationships between space and the body, gesture and the individual as well as the rupture between lived experience and its representation, so as to see and think differently.

Loaded with maps, camera, phone and notebook Rondeau logs her trouvailles and maps out her parcours. The Situationists were known to use walkie-talkies on their dérives. Similarly, she exploits today’s technology. Daily activities involve collecting ephemera, digital video and photography to map the geography of the experience and record the multiplicity of interstitial spaces between the departure and arrival points. Maintaining a record of the borders crossed and the landscapes traversed; while dealing with the elements and the fatigue that is at the core of long-distance cycling.

thanks for your comments! it sure was a lot of fun ... everyone present is already looking forward to the next edition of FAAS which will take place in 2010 !

Amazing that the Salon du livre du Grand Sudubury organized the free bike loan. really nice bike too.

I spent about 10 hours/day on the bike (including breaks) except the last day which was 5 hours (only 80km Noëlville>Sudbury)
